June 2025 GOSH Newsletter - Call for content

Hi everyone,

I’m getting ready to assemble the June edition of the GOSH newsletter and would love to include your updates! If you have anything you’d like to share - upcoming events, recent publications, job or funding opportunities, project news, or anything else of interest to the GOSH community - please post it here or message me directly by EOD Monday, June 16.

:mailbox_with_mail: What’s the GOSH Newsletter?
It’s our monthly digest of news from across the global open science hardware community. Each edition includes:

  • Highlights from the GOSH community
  • News from the wider world of open hardware
  • Opportunities to get involved
  • Community-led projects and publications

Want to receive it by email? Subscribe here!

Thanks so much for helping us keep the community informed, inspired, and in the loop.

Kind regards,
Jamaica

Would be great to announce our summer camp to be held from 2. - 10. August in Switzerland.

It’s a gathering of about 60-80 people into DIY culture, electronic music, open hardware and making / hiking / cooking in general.

Here are a few things that I have gleaned from newsletters and conversations. Apologies if any of these are repeated from an earlier GOSH newsletter.

  • Humanitarian Technology Trust - A foundation set up to support the OpenFlexure microscope project (mentioned below), but may expand to other open hardware projects to meet global challenges later (link). @julianstirling
  • OpenFlexure Microscope - The project just did a beta release of the microscope hardware and a first alpha release of the software overhaul. @julianstirling
  • Mothbox wins Wildlabs Grant (Again) - Newsletter post is here, scroll down to the section about the grant, but there is other great information in there too. @hikinghack @briannaljohns
  • Open Science Shop - This project had a Mothbox working group meeting on June 10th, although that will be before the GOSH newsletter comes out. Maybe the meeting notes can be included in the newsletter if they are published before EOD on June 16th? I’m not sure who is best to tag here. Perhaps @zool or @adrianMolecule ?

I think this is the update from the OpenScienceShop Mothbox working group. I got lost on the days, and they had already had the June 10th meeting when I mentioned it in my post above. The linked post gives some nice updates on the state of the project and the working group.

Thanks @jcm80 and @jmwright! Much appreciated.

A couple more recent publications to include:

Gharbi S, Poiraud E, Le Guenno H, Grandgirard E, Rousseau C, Burke N, Mutterer J, Rousseau D. Enderscope. py: A library for computational imaging using the EnderScope automated microscope. SoftwareX. 2025 Sep 1;31:102210.

[Preprint] Coca-Lopez N, Alcolea-Rodriguez V, Bañares MA, Brockhauser S, Gorenflot J, Henderson A, et al. Open and FAIR Raman spectroscopy. Paving the way for artificial intelligence. ChemRxiv. 2025; doi:10.26434/chemrxiv-2025-0q2mt
