I researched a bit for slack alternatives and matrix.org with element still seems to be the easiest. We used this with dinacon before and it worked well.

You can use it in a web browser, or download “element classic” on a phone

It will ask you to sign up for a free matrix.org account and that’s it!

Cool! One might need to download “Element X” instead of “classic” if they want to create their accounts with the app.

I believe Element classic is being phased-out: I tried it yesterday for a friend and it seems to no longer let one create an account. Though you can use it if you already created your account with a different app.
