Project SAVI: $15 Open-Source Somatosensory Wearable for Dementia Care (CERN-OHL-P v2, ESP32)

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share an open-source hardware initiative developed to provide equitable, non-pharmacological support for agitation and perceptual isolation in dementia care: Project SAVI.

Project Overview:

Traditional palliative interventions often rely heavily on pharmacological sedation, which carries debilitating functional side effects. SAVI is engineered as a low-cost, non-invasive alternative built around sensory stimulation and a strict $15 Target BOM.

Key Technical Aspects:

  • Acoustic-Haptic Transduction: Captures familiar acoustic resonances and vocal timbres (85 Hz – 255 Hz) and transduces them into somatosensory cutaneous vibrations (150 Hz – 300 Hz) targeting Pacinian corpuscles.
  • Microcontroller: ESP32-based open architecture.
  • Eco-Kinetic Integration: A zero-power complementary glove design utilizing ambient kinetic energy and micro-currents.
  • Open Governance: Licensed under CERN-OHL-P v2 (Hardware) and MIT (Firmware).

The full methodology and somatic anchoring paradigms are published as open preprints via Figshare:

I am actively looking for feedback from the open hardware community, academic researchers, and potential collaborators interested in pilot trials or frugal biomedical hardware development.

Looking forward to your thoughts and critique!
