Given the state of science funding from places like the USA, me and @briannaljohns have been contemplating other ways to travel around, do research, and share it, so maybe becoming Moth Djs is a more sustainable way to do research?
Anyway, does anyone know good open source VJ-ing software?
Touchdesigner and VVVV are both unfortunately not open source and seem to be the main tools people use to do live visuals these days. They are both free for non-commercial use, but not really open.
Touchdesigner seems to have a lot more tutorials and resources out there of artists using them to make neat generative art.
VVVV is made by a friend so I’m leaning towards that, but ideally i want something like touch designer that is kind of like Processing. There is Puredata https://puredata.info/ (but it seems like it might not have been updated since 2017.
Anything I’m missing here?

I’m not a VJ, so I can’t personally recommend anything for performances. However:
I don’t think they would be any issue mixing tools as well.
There are also live coding music and visualization tools, and those performances are not something people are used to seeing, so they’re usually pretty fascinated.

I’ve played around with SonicPi for a few minutes, but never had the time to really learn it. I also don’t have a background in music, so that does not help me.

Hello! I’m don’t even know If the definition of “VJ-ing” I have corresponds with reality, but I recommend Pure Data a lot. It is currently mantained. Latest stable release is 2 years old and it has commits from it’s author, Miller Puckette, from this week in the repo.
It has a graphics extension library called GEM: GEM - Introduction — Pd Community Site
In general, Pure Data might look a little uglier/more complex, but there’s top notch documentation for it, a ton of open source projects you can use as a reference/for study/just borrow and once you learn it it will give you a ton of freedom over how you use your stuff.
