Open Infrastructures for Global Health, Education and Open Science (Sept. 25)

Hey all! I am happy to share news of an exciting hybrid panel session hosted by @Henning as part of the Science Summit 2026 held in New York in September.

The Open Infrastructures for Global Health, Education and Open Science session has been announced for Friday, September 25 (11:00 AM–3:00 PM EDT), and has been designed to bring together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and community leaders to explore how open hardware, open software, open standards, and open science can strengthen global health, education, research, and public-interest infrastructures.

The program includes a fabulous lineup of speakers from organizations including CERN, CNRS, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, openEHR International, the Open Source Hardware Association, and many others. We’re especially excited to see several familiar faces from the GOSH community among the speakers: @alex9000, @Adrian, @Samuel, and our friend Julian Stirling.

The session will examine practical experiences and governance challenges around topics including scientific instrumentation, health technologies, interoperability, capacity building, distributed manufacturing, and the role of open infrastructures in supporting more equitable, resilient, and locally adaptable systems.

It looks like an excellent program, and we hope many GOSH community members will be able to join. If you’re planning to attend, let us know in the comments!

Dear Jamaica, all. It is an honor to convene this session. It will be a pleasure to see you all around in this event. I am proud to host two members of the GOSH community as speakers, thanks to @Jamaica. I am looking forward for their grassroots take, and their entrepreneurial spirit. We have also experts, top level as the rest, on education: from UNESCO and a Global Teacher Prize laureate who already is looking forward to set this technology in the hands of hundreds of thousands of children thanks to her own foundation, presenting on the need of openness in order to bring the technologies into the hands of children, skilling up to become the leaders of the future, thriving instead of starving as tragically many do still in this World of ours. Education and health, including environmental health, are the two most pressing and urgent use cases of open hardware. Please, also feel free to bring questions to the speakers roster beforehand: myself happy to help us have this sort of conversation ongoing, on how to best set the open infrastructures we would love to see in place.
