Hardware Lead - Biodiversity / Conservation (based in Europe)

Hi all,

Came across the following opportunity from the Wildlabs community and am sharing below:

GreenTech Hardware Lead – Biodiversity Monitoring

Location: Fully remote within Europe, +/- 2 hours of GMT.

Salary: £55K – £75K + benefits

How would you like to do something that’s never really been done before?

Biodiversity is the term that underpins the climate crisis. If we can stabilise and improve biodiversity then our ability to adapt to Earth’s changing climate becomes infinitely easier.

But how do you track biodiversity and how many species are present in an area or region, or how healthy populations of wildlife, trees, fungi, flora & fauna are?

Well, cue this company. Using remote sensors to gather data with some machine learning to analyse initial findings which will be validated by experts and then cross-referenced with citizen science and fieldwork, they will track growth and increases in species present across the projects they support.

They’re after a hardware specialist. Someone with experience adapting off-the-shelf products to meet operational demands in challenging environments around the world, finding ways to improve resilience and efficiency of equipment, organising logistics of getting hardware to global sites and team members, procurement and partnerships, maintenance schedules and importantly, budgets.

You’ll undertake field testing and will be required to travel internationally to meet with partners, assess sites your equipment monitor, troubleshoot and overcome the problems that are tricky to foresee.

Strategy, product road-mapping, budgets and resource management will be important too, as you will contribute to ensuring the company prioritise and identify the right skill sets and expertise needed to achieve their ambitious goals.

Naturally, they’re keen to find people who’re passionate about addressing biodiversity loss and the climate crisis. Curiosity is probably the most sought-after attribute as you’ll need to find solutions to challenging problems with little in the way of industry or established practice to take inspiration from.

Having exp attending trade shows or industry events, conferences, capitalising on networking or funding opportunities, strong organisation and operations exp will also stand out as there will be different hoops to jump and red-tape to slash in different countries.

They’re a start-up currently at ~15 people, so being open-minded to wearing different hats will be necessary. And after all that, good communication skills, an understanding of how much there is to learn in the realm of biodiversity and a drive for solving problems will see you succeed in this role.

If you have some of the above but a deep understanding of biodiversity, please reach out. If you have no exp or knowledge of biodiversity but have exp with drones, remote sensors and other monitoring hardware then it’ll also be worth hitting apply!
