Dinacon 2025 - June 23-July 22 - Bali with Sea Communities!

Dinacon is Back!

The Fourth Digital Naturalism Conference: Bali, June 23-July 22, 2025 with Sea Communities!

Me @OSHWA @leeborg and @pte are running it! Thanks also to @Harold who originally connected us with Sea Communities!

You are invited to apply to join us next June and July for the fourth edition of our experimental unconference about interacting with nature! https://2025.dinacon.org/

If you are new to Dinacon, it’s a fun thing where we gather people together from all over the world to join with a local partner in a spot with interesting nature. There you have to come up with and complete some kind of project for yourself and help give feedback on other folks’ projects. The entire theme is about finding new ways of interacting with the natural world.

This means no matter your background (perhaps biology, architecture, computer programming), you are invited to help us learn ways to play with the living non-human world.

Local Partner - Sea Communities

This time, Dinacon will be joining with Sea Communities! They are a super cool group in Les Village on the outskirts of Bali island who run community projects to improve the nearby environment (like coral restoration, salt farming, or DIY plastic recycling!). They offer tons of different extra activities too like scuba diving and cultural tours!

How to Join?

You can actually apply now! We are still getting more information together on the page (like different node leaders that will be hosting public projects), but you can go ahead and apply now if you want! Our application is simple, mostly you just tell us about a project you think you want to do when you join us! So check out the information, think about something fun you want to do there, and submit an application. (Note: we expect most project proposals will drastically change by the time dinacon happens, don’t worry about that!)

Early Applications Close: November 3, 2024
All Applications Close: Jan 1, 2025

How Much Does it Cost?

See our cost calculator here!* There is a sliding scale for people who can pay more to help provide subsidized rates for those who can’t. Costs include food, lodging, and transportation from the airport (not materials or flights). In general, it will probably cost around $89 per person per day. This is cheaper than just the cost of most hotels at most conferences! This is cheaper than just the registration fee at most conferences!

*Note these numbers are not final. We are still refining the actual figures, but this will give you a ballpark idea!

@hikinghack Is this structured so that someone can come for just a week to work on a project? How do the nodes work? Can someone apply to run a node, and if so, does that require them to stay longer (or for the full month)?

Sorry if these questions are answered somewhere. I didn’t see answers on the homepage.

Yep most folks come for just a week!

Everyone can do anything they want, the node leaders are just People usually from previous dinacons who we got to volunteer to lead public workshops . So don’t worry about that. You can propose workshops too or whatever you want!

Nobody stays for the full month, stays are between like 5-20 days

@Harold The original post mentions that you made the connection to Sea Communities. Does this mean that you will be at Dinacon? I do not know yet if I will be able to attend, but my goal would be to bring a prototype (open hardware) hand-held chlorophyll fluorometer that a scuba diver or snorkeler could collect data with. I would really like for this fluorometer to be attachable to the BabyAUV (and other underwater equipment) at some point in the future. If it worked out that we were there at the same time, it would be great to discuss the past and future of the BabyAUV project, get your thoughts on the fluorometer instrument, and discuss ideas about configurable/modular instrumentation (among many other things).

A fluorometer would be fantastic! and in keeping with what Sea Communities do.

Yes I’ll be there, but even if schedules do not overlap, there are always plenty of interesting folks about. My intent is to be there earlier than later, so that the cargo bike I’m planning to build there will be available for general use sooner than later.

@hikinghack Can I apply even if I’m not 100% sure that I can make the travel costs and schedule work out?

Ahahahha as veterans of these things we don’t actually believe everyone who applies is going to show up

So, yes, definitely please apply!

Here’s a basic timeline:

Jan 1 applications close
After that we will yry to get back to people as soon as possible about acceptances!

Then probably early February the first down payment is due to hold your spot.

Then i think probably in april the second payment will be due.

We have had people cancel at any of these stages, people who have even fully paid. In all cases We refund what we can but the rest goes help the operations at the community partner
