This is a very interesting questions which we would like to address in the Issues in Open Science Hardware section of our Journal of Open Hardware https://openhardware.metajnl.com .
In this section of the new journal we publish full-length papers about open hardware such as collaboration, business models, legal aspects etc, but so far we do not have a submission yet that covers your exact question. If you find ongoing research in this direction, please remind them of the opportunity to write a publication with us.
@thomas.maillart, can you help with further pointers?
