TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION
i. Values driving OSH as teaching tool
ii. Alternative uses of Hardware as OSH teaching tools apart from complicated electronics
iii. No limitation of Age group for teaching learning OSH
iv. Collaboration and sharing of Teaching tools and methodologies of OSH.

TASKS: Share everyone’s work and resources in The Forum.

i. Values driving OSH as teaching tool

  • Emphasize on critical making, finding solutions to problem in day-to-day lives they could relate to.- Julieta
  • Purpose of OSH to be relevant to finding solutions to problems and not just be materials of consumers or commercial use. - Gustavo
  • Developing curiosity is important for teaching.- Kina
  • The types of tools given may have difference in generating curiosity in students. Like having and Arduino and a Drill machine without any prior knowledge, Students tend to explore and play more with the drill to make holes than work with Arduino. - Puneet
  • Pilot project for OSH to community designed for audiences having no understanding of the tools at all reaching out in the community for problem solving. - Gayatri
  • Is OSH teaching tools only for creating curiosity or also about enhancing technical knowledge and skills in the commoners? - Tean
  • Students have questions about teacher being a bad at teaching? How to become a better teacher ? **- Filinich **
  • Observations and Reflections could add value to our teaching- learning process - Marc
  • OSH teaching tools becoming more of commercial use rather than contributing to educating people. - Marc
  • limitation of resources should not limit learning OSH, have alternatives that are cheaper and locally available and share alternative use of resources. - Gayatri

ii. Alternative uses of Hardware as OSH teaching tools apart from complicated electronics

  • How teaching Arduino or any OSH tool be relevant to people with minimal knowledge or skill? - Puneet
  • How can we reduce electronics in teaching OSH and use more mechanical tools and hardware? - Puneet
  • Having multiple uses of locally available and reusable hardware is possible even in under privileged environment. - Julieta
  • Using Drum and bucket as hardware for developing OSH tools working with adults involved in farming. - Akbar
  • Arduino could be difficult to teach to all age groups. But by his experience teaching through tweaking and debugging helps to learn better, learning in details. Children like more hands on first and then knowledge is felt necessary. To teach is to learn. It is necessary to change mindset of teaching and how we learn.- Shams
  • Modelling through 3D printing, Prototyping using Clay toy. - Jorge
  • Aerogami is teaching aeronautics through origami. Which involves less electronic and more mechanical. - Kshitiz

iii. No limitation of Age group for teaching learning OSH

*Inclusive of old people in a makerspace collaborating, sharing and mentoring their ideas with the kids. - Puneet

iv. Collaboration and sharing of Teaching tools and methodologies of OSH.

  • Create a community that talks about values, tools and techniques of teaching OSH. // Collaborate through written docs and things we do. - Gustavo

  • Workshopology- in the forum having resources sharing.-Marc
We decided to put together list and overview of resources and best practices.

@dusjagr has noted some educational resources on the hackteria wiki under the label “Workshopology” and “J’aime”:

Earlier discussions on this forum has already approached some of the educational methods, how and where OSH can be useful (or not), and we can summarize more in this session category.

Overview of topic:
OSH can mean: Open Science Hardware or… Overly Sensitive Human
We put the (OSH) in brackets to focus more on the teaching method and the human itself involved in the facilitation of learning experiences.
