Hi!
I am an interaction designer with 20 years experience. I currently work as a part-time consultant, where I design the user experience of smart home mobile apps and gateway interfaces. Over the last 2 years, I’ve been involved in a number of open source IoT initiatives through Sensorica – a peer-to-peer open innovation network. One of these projects is called Breathing Games - an open source mobile game that promotes respiratory health in children, by encouraging them to do their breathing exercises.

In addition, I work as an independent design researcher. My research interests focus on participatory and decentralised approaches to design in community contexts. I recently presented a paper on one of Sensorica’s projects at a Cumulus conference in Hong Kong, titled Democratising Design in Scientific Innovation: Application of an Open Value Network to Open Source Hardware Design. I am currently designing a new study to measure participant engagement at two Breathing Games game jams (I’m involved in Breathing Games as both a UX designer and as a design researcher). In addition to open science, other interests include participatory urbanism, application of blockchain technology for IoT, and use of embedded devices in public art installations.

I am also an active participant in various academic and community service activities. I was an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Design in Society, (Volume 9, Issue 3), session chair and member of the conference organising committee of the Eighth International Conference on Design Principles and Practices (Vancouver) and co-organiser of the Breathing Games game jams in Montreal.

On a more personal note, I speak 4 languages, love to travel and can pull a mean espresso
