I am Shuttleworth Foundation Fellow at the University of Cambridge where I research the role and impact of open science and open intellectual property in research and innovation. My work focuses on initiatives that increase access to scientific tools such as instrumentation and biological reagents to build an open, equitable and sustainable bioeconomy. Making research tools more accessible, used and useful is an experiment that can provide insights into the economics and social science of science and I am particularly interested in the social outcomes of distributed innovation with next generation biotechnologies in low-resource settings.

Prior to my Fellowship I coordinated the Synthetic Biology initiatives OpenPlant and the SynBio SRI and completed a PhD in genetic control of mosquito populations. I've co-founded two non-profits, ContentMine and Biomakespace, to open up access to scientific research and its outputs.
