Notes from GOSH Governance WG Meeting #8 - 19 Oct 2020

Hi All

Latest notes from a productive governance call below! Next call is on Tue 3 Nov 2020, 14:00 UTC [note new day]

In the meantime, please:

  1. Review notes and add items to the table of what we want and don’t want from a governance group
  2. Consider how we would seat this long-term governance group to best meet our goals for group composition and structure.

Notes

It was agreed last time that the governance spreadsheet that emerged from our work to date is good set of recommendations but we need to:

  • formalize scope of groups
  • process by which people are part of groups
  • recommendations for these groups
  • expectations of members of management group
The agenda for this meeting is therefore to discuss and move towards decisions on:
  • How do we envision the structure of a management group?
  • How do we get that group in place?
  • Possible scenarios of how this representation can be made
  • How to engage broad GOSH community (call) (after first version of proposal is complete)

How do we envision the structure of a management group?

See previous Spreadsheet

Discussion 1: brainstorm on what we do and don’t want in a structure for a governing group

(see google doc for table as difficult to paste in Markdown!)

For reference: the demographic goals of GOSH 2018 were (overlaps are possible):

  • Women, Trans, and/or non-conforming: 52% of attendees
  • People of color, Indigenous people, and people from the Majority World: 52% of attendees
  • People from Asia [because this was where GOSH was hosted]: 33% of attendees
  • Unaffiliated, community-based organization/NGO: 33% of attendees

Decision: We should propose these ideas to the community but also to other open communities to stress test the plans externally to see if others with experience feel it is too simple, too complex, too idealistic etc.

Decision: We should make a list of decisions we are deferring to long-term governing group

  • Handling CoC issues - should this be done by governing group, or should CoC/community-health-focused group be seated?

For next meeting:

  1. How do we get that group in place?
  2. Possible scenarios of how this representation can be made
  3. How to engage broad GOSH community (call) (after first version of proposal is complete

Actions for working group members in advance of next meeting

  1. Whole WG to review notes and add items to the table of what we want and don’t want from a governance group
  2. Consider how we would seat this long-term governance group to best meet our goals for group composition and structure.
