Hi everyone, here’s a LINK to the notes in spanish of our 1st Latin American session. We hope to see you there

Just to make sure this goes into the GOSH programme, I’m translating the sessions’s notes to English for this time and putting them here. Excuse my english please

Session Title: Latin America GOSH 1st session

Date: March 25th 2017

Attendees (who was there?):

  • Rafael Pezzi (Brasil)
  • Séverine Cazaux (Chile)
  • Byron Tarabata (Ecuador)
  • Renzo Filinich (Perú-Chile)
  • Pierre Padilla (Perú)
  • Eduardo Padilha Antonio (Brasil)
  • Benjamin Zamora (Chile)
  • Julieta Rodríguez (Colombia)
  • Gustavo Pereyra Irujo (Argentina)
  • Hamilton Mestizo (Colombia)
  • Alejandro Nadra (Argentina)
  • Leslie García (México)
  • Julieta Arancio (Argentina)

Overview of topic (3-6 sentences):
This first meeting arose since many of us were commenting that in Latin America the processes of developing tecnologías libres (libre= free as in freedom) presents differences from those taking place in other places.

We believe it is important to identify these differences, whether they are limitations or opportunities, so that we can strengthen ourselves and grow through learning and collaborative work among the continent’s initiatives/projects.

The group works then feeding from the discussion and learning of global GOSH, and in turn contributing to its development with the Latin American vision of the construction of a movement of tecnología libre.

Notes:

Specific proposals

  1. Use - when available, as it’s still being developed - the ‘Common Ground’ tool for collaborative work

  2. Share the areas of expertise of each participant and the facilities that we have within the projects. This was then discussed and it was considered that although it is well to do lists, it is more useful to look for common working topics that can organize the experience and facilities available more efficiently

  3. Consolidate a Latin America network with the possibility of cross-visits between projects

  4. Use TecnoX 2018 as the next meeting point in Chile. We still have to discuss in which way we can participate there.

  5. Rebuild the history of free/libre knowledge in Latin America to learn from it and how its specifics define our identity. We talked about doing it visually and attractively (art?). The SCIELO project and the FLOK network of Ecuador were named as examples. It was also mentioned that the beginning of open source hardware started in Colombia prior to Arduino’s appearance in Italy.

  6. Terminology: The concept of ‘hardware abuerti’ is often unrepresentative and limiting to our work with communities. It would be better to use the term ‘libre’ instead of ‘abierto’ since our languages do not have the limitation of free as in freedom or free as free of charge. Also it’s more useful the use of ‘technology’ instead of ‘hardware’ in order to extend the definition beyond the scope of computing. We agreed then that ‘Tecnología Libre’ is a better option. To complement, Rafael Pezzi suggested sharing the story of free software that he has written about [Julieta A .: translate doc from Pezzi and share in the forum]

  7. In the Latino Americana category of the GOSH discussion forums, anyone can use either English, Spanish or Portuguese, as we can all understand those. We took this model from the Latin American forum of the Free Software Foundation

  8. Work on potential law proposals in Mexico and Argentina about taxing intellectual property and / or large companies so those funds are then used for research and development purposes. From this Mexico-Argentinian ideas the goal is to expand them somehow throughout Latin America

  9. Share the Hardware Liberation Hackaton methodology that the Brazilian guys from CTA team are planning as a contribution that can be made in global GOSH

Topics of more general discussion

  1. Think about issues that are relevant for us to work as Latin Americans, such as: water / agriculture / habitat (housing) / technological sovereignty / intellectual property and common goods (seeds, medicinal plants, knowledge)

  2. Encourage in some way that the social sciences participate more in events like GOSH

  3. Think of communication and outreach strategies, for which artists, designers and people in the social sciences are key

  4. Work on the relationship between tecnologías libres and co-design with social movements and communities

  5. If necessary, look for other communication platforms to use beyond the forum, especially for the overload of images or videos that may come to be

  6. Have training instances within the group, collaborative, in order to improve our level of work in these objectives
