Interest in a "how to solder" skillshare?

I have a spool of leaded solder I’d be happy to bring along. I also could make up a couple syringes of solder paste if that would be useful.

With the same motivation as expressed by @dusjagr, I too am interested in a “how to teach ‘how to teach soldering’”. And very likely @kaspar is correct, this is best taught by teaching (without going into a self-recursion loop).

Count me in.

Hoied mitenand,

been thinking and took the challenge on some creative way of teaching design and solder of SMD boards. as i have just been spending the last weeks constantly on my MixTape designs… i came up with this:
diy CAD - draw your own board → and send it to manufacture / or etch at home.

i prepared some of those laminated parts and we can give it a try as a “teaching” SMD workshop. i’ll make some creative boards here these days with my friends and we can use them as beginner kits for SMD. the function is a little temp-sensor monitring attiny85 thingy.

ii call it “Gär Lämpli” ferment monitoring tool, to check temperatures of your Sauerkraut, Koji rice or whatever you are brewing.

I’ll bring the chemicals and some boards.

Greets,

I am very interested in the etch at home capability. Let’s make a witches brew:

Thrice the brinded cat hath mew'd.
Thrice and once the hedge-pig whined.
Harpier cries 'Tis time, 'tis time.

so we gave it a try today…

also discussing to directly send it for pcb production, maybe including assembly. should be around 8$ a piece for a batch of 40, 4 designs 10 each, all inclusive parts, delivery… delivery time less than a week here in taiwan.

So I hastily purchased supplies, mostly looking around my own bench and figuring that would be useful for others. Lots of overlap with Marc’s list. So, we will have 7 full kits.

Here is list of items and kit info: GOSH supply sheet - Google Sheets

Here’s some images of the mess that is trying to get kits together at midnight the day before you take a 15 hour flight, and my son’s first experience with a solder sucker (don’t worry, I hadn’t use it yet so don’t call child protective services :).

I hope these are useful for the conference, but I’m also excited to think about how we could use these supplies across the year to improve outreach and skill sharing for GOSH.

hei greg, lucky you, only 15h… i’ll be on my way for more than 40h!!

ahja… making these kits and packing hands-on tools. it’s some kinda weird embodied knowlegde, beyond lists. afer 10 years of geek experiences in SGMK, i can doing with my eyes closed, sleep-deprived, drunk or in any other state of mind. and the more you forget, the more creative the prototyping lab will be and we’ll need hacks around to get what we want.

i am preparing this “kit to make kits with kids” for the smd-soldering how to make pcb’s etc…

been laminating the whole night.

but happy to have the “official” realease of the new and open and (not exactly) free diy-CAD environment at GOSH:

I wanna !! I also realize that lovely name is prone to disastrous (hilarious, depending on your point of view) spelling mistake transformations. Imagine a “kit to make kids with kits.” This is why they said we shouldn’t do DIY Bio

Sorry @el.fostek just noticed your direct reply. I am not sure how this will pan out but I am glad you are up for helping. I think those handouts will be useful. Loads of people have already replied saying they will bring kits and equipment. We have a few days before Friday to see what we can pull together.

Everyone that is interested in helping with this workshop, lets meet on the stage at 17.15 today and start to get organized.

@el.fostek @gbathree @biomurph @kina.smith

Ok so, we took stock of our tool supplies and we have 7 tool kits that include soldering irons. We have some extra irons that others have brought along. Something that just occurred to me: @gbathree do we have any helping hands in those tool kits? I will try and buy some blue tack which we could use as a simple holding aide instead.

In terms of kits of things that people can make I will take stock of my kit supplies and report in as I gave a lot of them away at my tabling. We also have components and proto board but no design yet for those components. We have a few odd kits here and there mostly on the through-hole end. @dusjagr wasn’t able to make our little meeting but has brought a lot of components and suggests making some surface-mount designs and etching them over night.

We weren’t able to get any specialist surface mount assembly equipment together but I we can teach surface mount hand assembly using soldering irons.

@el.fostek I didn’t see you at the meeting, are you still up for helping? Did you bring the printouts of soldering is easy?

We have two pair of helping hands, and one full on mini vice. So maybe for a subset of people can use them -

Greg

Cool, I will still try and track down some blue tack then.

I forgot to summarize: we will go for a 1h30 mins session and hopefully with the amount of people up for instructing it will be a relaxed session for everyone involved. I guess there is scope for extending it for another 1h30 mins if there is demand?

Hi @kaspar! Since I didn’t hear back about interest in the print outs before I left for travel, it slipped my mind and I did not bring them. However, I might be able to print a few copies tonight just to have on hand.

Also, sorry to have missed the meet up this eve! I am definitely down to help coordinate. Will you be at the dinner?

Yes, I think we should make some printouts. It’ll be something people can look over if all the instructors are busy. We should print out some of the Spanish version as well.

Indeed, I will be at the dinner/bar tonight and we can speak about it then!

Just remembered another thing I didn’t check specifically: wire snippers. I have one pair. Any in those kits @gbathree?

Have wire snippers, strippers in all kits. Here’s the full contents of each kit -

Awww but that takes all the fun out of me posting “what about…”.

I have blutack… But its not blue, i hope that works.
